Product managers are individuals who thrive under pressure and they carry a heavy degree of responsibilities in their chosen profession. A product manager is a person who is responsible for the planning, development, and marketing of different products for the company where he is employed. When a product manager is given a product, he is in charge of everything about that one product.

There is a team, or group of people, that works with any product manager, but it is this one person who is the central hub for all of the other workers on the project. Many a time the product manager has more than one product to deal with at a time. It is very vital for the product manager to understand what every other member of his or her group is doing at any given time. There will be many individual employees who report to the product manager and perform the tasks that will bring a new product to market and successfully sell it to the target audience. This is the project management team that works with the manager to create a successful campaign for new company products.

In the planning phases, the product manager along with the project management team will identify any new product that the company needs to develop. Part of this planning session will include determining what the target market needs are, and delivering a product that will fit in with these needs. There is a great deal of work that goes into this first phase of a new product or product line that is being readied within a company.

The planning that is done at this stage should not be confused with the planning and scheduling that occurs in the actual manufacturing of a product. This type of initial planning is set on developing the features and functions of a product to meet the needs of the consumer. It includes things like product packaging, appearance, and even the initial marketing ideas.

There are a number of tasks involved in the marketing of any new product of the company. The development of a product is completed during the planning stages and then it is handed over to the marketing team for their input. This team will be concerned with pricing the product, promoting it, and placing it in a location where it can be seen and purchased.

By the time a new product is ready to be promoted and marketed, the target audience will have already been identified. It is the marketers' job to make sure that this target audience gets the message about the product and that they are also afforded ready access to it so that they can purchase it. This could include coupons, free samples, and heavy advertising. Not promoting a product sufficiently will result in a potentially great product sitting on the shelf of the store, completely unnoticed by the public.

To qualify for a product manager position you should have a marketing degree or a business degree. Depending on the products that you will be working with, an engineering degree might also be valuable when you are looking for this type of career position. These manager positions are available with many different companies and there are VP jobs available for those with some solid years of experience in product management. To find some of the top VP and product manager positions you can go to online job postings like Product Manager Crossing. Here you will be able to discover which companies are advertising openings for executive positions, or in the field of product management, and you can even apply for these jobs online.

Education is not the only thing that you should make sure is on your resume when it comes to applying for an executive job like Vice President in charge of product management. Related work experience will also be necessary if you are planning to apply for this type of job. Working in marketing for a period of time will help you obtain many of the job skills that can take you to the upper levels of management.

Companies require that executive job candidates have a history of successful product management experience and they should also be able to show that they had leadership roles during this time. Remember that the product manager is ultimately responsible for the marketing of a company's new product. So when you apply for a position of VP your expertise and experience will have to be of the caliber that can prove that you can handle the responsibilities.

One of the best ways to make yourself a viable candidate for a job like VP in product management is to work your way up the company ladder. You should be able to move up through the ranks of marketing and advertising if you channel your ambition and focus and consistently prove your merit by producing superior work. If you are applying in a new company, your resume and portfolio should be given a great deal of attention so that you have them polished to perfection.

Your resume should highlight all of the achievements you have made towards your ultimate goal. Of course, before you actually apply for a new position, you should completely revamp your resume so that it accurately reflects the work that you have done throughout your career. Showcasing your accomplishments and duties can make all the difference in getting you the job that you want.
